The Pangolin needs our help
Pangolins are in trouble. Susceptible to poaching and trafficking for their scales, pangolins are also endangered due to habitat loss through deforestation. Pangolins are the worlds' most trafficked animal and multiple sub-species are endangered, some critically.
Pangolin Facts
-
Endangered Scale Level
Best available evidence indicates that most pangolin species are considered to be facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
-
Insectivorous
Pangolins love to eat ants, along with termites, larvae and other small insects. They accomplish this by utilizing their long, sticky tongues to catch prey.
-
Scaled Exterior
The only scaled mammal in the world, a pangolins' scales are made of keratin (the same base as hair and fingernails). The pangolin stays protected by wearing a suit of armor at all times!
-
Defense Mechanism
When threatened, pangolins will roll up into a ball (like armadillos) and leave would-be predators staring at a round ball of spiky scales!
-
Species
There are 8 species of pangolin currently recorded, 4 residing in Asia and 4 in Africa. 3 of the 4 Asian species are critically endangered and populations continue to decrease.
-
Captivity
Pangolins do not fare well in captivity (typically succumbing to stress and disease), and up-close research is limited. This is a vital reason why pangolins must be saved and protected in the wild!
How to help the Pangolin
Each purchase of a pangolin stuffed animal provides funding to the Red Panda Network to continue conservation efforts of the red panda and other flagship species in Nepal such as the pangolin.
Snugglebug provides a monthly donation for conservation activities, as well as symbolically adopting Sita, a red panda mother to two cubs. The conservation funds of symbolic adoption also go towards protecting other flagship species, including pangolins.
